Jubilarian – 2010

Helen Hendricks, SSND
Professed in 1960

Sister HelenSister Helen Hendricks celebrates 50 years as a School Sister of Notre Dame. She became acquainted with the SSNDs in grade school and went on to become archdiocesan teacher of the year.

A meaningful time in my ministry…
In 1985, the members of my class were given a trip to Rome and Germany in celebration of our silver jubilee. This was a very memorable time for me. Mother Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger was beatified that year, and I especially treasured standing on the gravesite of our community’s foundress.

Another meaningful time for me was in the 1970s, when I was named teacher of the year in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. I was proud of this achievement and happy that my mother came down to Milwaukee by bus to see me accept the award.

What drew me to the SSND Community…
I had two aunts and cousins who were SSNDs. I also had SSNDs as teachers throughout grade school. The Sisters were (and are) very kind and generous people.

One thing you might like to know about the School Sisters of Notre Dame…
You can always recognize an SSND because of her love for community.

In my current ministry…
My current ministry is in Community Service at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Retirement Community, in Mount Calvary, Wis. I do many things, but mainly handle the switchboard and relate e-mail communications to the Sisters. Recently, I also became part-time secretary for the SUNSEED Eco-Education Center, an exciting ministry of the SSNDs.

Looking back and looking ahead…
I am thrilled to be a jubilarian. Who would have thought I’d see the 50th jubilee?
